Research Fellow/Senior Research Assistant in Visible Light Communications

Engineering and Environment

Applications are invited for an EPSRC-supported postdoctoral research fellow in the area of Organic Visible Light Communications (VLC). The successful candidate will conduct research relevant to VLC system design, implementation, measurement and characterization for indoor applications. This position is funded by a joint research project grant from EPSRC between University College London and Northumbria University. You will work with Prof Zabih Ghassemlooy and his research team at Northumbria University and will be coordinating research activities with others teams at University College London.

The EPSRC-funded project aims to develop the world's first complete VLC system, using organic/polymer optoelectronic components, and to demonstrate this in realistic system settings. The project will design and fabricated: Polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED) and detectors; transceiver electronic circuits and digital signal processing algorithms and optical wavelength division multiplexing components. The designed devices and sub-systems will be integrated into a complete VLC system, transmitting data under realistic environmental conditions. Specially optimised signals and modulation formats will be designed to achieve hundreds of Mbit/s capacity in a typical office/home range and assess performance in a specially assembled indoor environment.

The candidate should have a good knowledge and practical skills in electronics, communications engineering, optical communications, numerical simulation and digital signal processing. Design skills in communications system, and mathematical modelling as well as Matlab simulation are essential. Applicants must hold a PhD degree or have submitted a PhD thesis in optical communications or electronics engineering. It is expected that the successful candidate will carry out independent research and produce high-quality publications throughout the project.
